Extension Charm by textile designer Elena Eulitz explores the question of how an elastic fabric without plastic could look like. By over-twisting a yarn to the point where it starts to coil, and then weaving it, an elastic fabric is made out of solely one material - wool. The yarn works similar to a spring, but if not secured, the over-twisted yarn will unravel and its potential energy will be released. Extension charm locks the energy by interlacing the yarn in an open weave, partly pre-tensioned and partly in its over-twisted state.
The yarn used in Extension Charm was produced with the HILO Spinning Machine (1.0 that enabled the precise application of over twist and tension, essential in the creation of flexible fabrics.
